Area description

Formerly the county town of Kincardineshire, Stonehaven is a resort town, set in a sheltered position where the Carron Water and the Cowie Water empty into the North Sea.

This attractive seaside resort, with heated open-air Olympic size swimming pool and 18 hole golf course, has a picturesque and sheltered harbour, busy with sailing yachts.

The Tolbooth Museum is a notable building situated on the quayside, and the great fortress of Dunnottar Castle (whose origins date from the 11th Century) is situated on the sheer 160 foot cliff tops to the south of the town.

Close at hand, Fowlsheugh RSPB Seabird Colony is home to the largest seabird colony in mainland Britain, and is well worth a visit.

#110 The location is fantastic
By Mrs Cox on 14-Nov-2011 for a stay in November, 1999

The location is fantastic; in the middle of nowhere, but close enough to go and visit the loads of stuff in the area. We saw some amazing sunrises. We didn't see any deer in the garden this year, but we did see the Queen at Balmoral!

#109 We loved the position and the quietness
By Mrs Porrill on 14-Nov-2011 for a stay in November, 1999

We loved the position and the quietness. Lots to see and places to go, we took the coastal route and visited all the tiny fishing coves, we went to the oldest smoke house in Scotland and bought some fresh fish and the owner showed us round which was very enjoyable. The weather was kind to us and we had sun everyday, a first for any of my Scottish holidays. The owner was very polite and helpful. A beautiful place I would recommend it to anyone who wants a quiet break.

#108 The cottage is finished to a high standard
By Mr Macdonald on 14-Nov-2011 for a stay in November, 1999

The cottage is finished to a high standard in an excellent location, not too far from Stonehaven town centre and other attractions. This is our second visit in successive years and we will definitely consider coming back.

#107 This is an absolutely stunning litte cottage
By Taffy White on 14-Nov-2011 for a stay in November, 1999

This is an absolutely stunning litte cottage set in some of the most beautifull surroundings. The whole cottage was set out brilliantly and everything was clean and as it should be. The local village of Stonehaven had some lovely resturants and pubs and was extremely friendly and welcoming. All in all i loved the cottage, the location and i cant wait to return.
